You should probably watch this if you have a rainy Sunday and a soft spot for people staring intensely at letters they probably shouldn't be reading. It is definitely for the crowd that enjoys a good "what if I chose the other guy" story. If you need things to actually happen every five minutes, you will likely find this incredibly boring. 🎬
Mady Christians plays Inge and she has this way of looking exhausted before the movie even really starts. She gives up her whole singing career to marry Hubert. Hubert is played by Walter Jankuhn and he seems like the kind of guy who has never laughed at a joke in his entire life.
Hubert is safe. Safe is usually another word for dull in these old dramas.
Everything is fine for five years until the old flame shows up. This is Hans Stüwe playing the former costar. He has a mustache that looks like it was drawn on with a very determined pencil. It is very distracting.
The way he looks at Inge across a crowded room is *super* uncomfortable. It is not romantic at all. It feels more like he is trying to remember if he left the stove on at home. 🤨
There is this one scene with a piano that goes on about thirty seconds too long. You can feel the movie trying to convince you this moment matters. I just kept thinking about how much dust must be on those keys.
The pacing reminds me a bit of Love's Sweet Piffle. But this one has way more crying and fewer jokes.
I noticed a weird shadow on the wall in the dining room scene. It looks like a giant hand is about to grab Hubert's head. I am almost certain it was just a lighting mistake by the crew. But it was the most exciting part of that ten-minute conversation.
Inge spends a lot of time looking at her old costumes. The sequins look heavy. You can tell she misses the noise of the theater even if she says she loves the quiet house. It is a very relatable bit of regret.
The drama really kicks in when the secrets start leaking out. It is not quite as intense as The Price of Innocence. It feels more like a small tea kettle whistling than a house fire.
Hubert wears these really high collars. They look like they are actually choking him. Maybe that is why he is so grumpy all the time. 👔
One reaction shot of the maid lingers so long it becomes funny. She just stands there holding a tray like she’s been frozen in time. I wonder if the director forgot to yell cut.
The movie gets noticeably better once it stops taking itself so seriously. There are a few moments where the side characters get to be a bit silly. It helps break up the gloom.
I found myself rooting for the chaos. Just a little bit. It makes the movie feel more alive when things are falling apart for Inge and her boring husband.
The sets look like they were built in a weekend. They are pretty, but you can tell the walls might wobble if someone slammed a door too hard. It adds to the charm, honestly.
The ending feels a bit rushed. Like they realized they were running out of film and needed to wrap it up fast. One minute everyone is miserable, and the next, it is just... over.
It is an okay movie for the genre. Just okay. It is better than some of the other stuff from 1928, but it won't change your life or anything. 🤷♂️
If you like seeing how people used to drama, give it a go. Just don't expect it to make total sense.
