Summary
Emerging from the primeval mist of the Pacific Northwest, a nameless protagonist functions as a haunting tabula rasa, her identity erased by the cruel hand of amnesia. This spectral figure wanders into the visceral, hyper-masculine ecosystem of a frontier logging camp—a domain where the rule of law is merely a distant rumor and the raw impulse of survival dictates social hierarchy. The narrative, penned by the formidable Bess Meredyth, eschews simple melodrama for a gritty exploration of vulnerability amidst the towering Douglas firs. As the girl becomes a focal point for the camp’s unchecked libidos and predatory instincts, the film examines the tension between her profound helplessness and the secrets harbored by the camp's more sinister denizens. Her presence acts as a catalyst, stripping away the thin veneer of civilization from the loggers and revealing a landscape where salvation is as rare as a clear conscience. The arrival of a potential 'gentleman' savior provides the central moral friction: is his intervention a genuine act of chivalry or merely another form of possession in a world defined by the exploitation of both timber and soul?
