7.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. A Night at the Opera remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like your comedy fast, loud, and completely indifferent to the laws of physics, yes. This is the gold standard for people who think high society needs a good kick in the pants. If you need a movie to make sense or have a coherent plot, you will probably hate every single second of it.
The whole thing is basically an excuse for Groucho to talk circles around people until they just give up. There’s this one bit where he’s reading a contract, and honestly, I had to pause it because I was laughing so hard at the 'sanity clause' joke. It’s so stupid. But it works.
Harpo is a menace. He doesn't say a word, but he manages to dismantle an entire stage production just by being there. The way he hides things in his coat is like a magic trick that went wrong in the best way possible.
Chico is just there to be the exasperated straight man, which is a thankless job, but he does it with such a weird, calm energy. You can tell they weren't always following the script, especially in the scenes with Margaret Dumont. She looks genuinely confused half the time, and I bet she wasn't even acting.
The pacing is a disaster, but in a way that feels intentional. It’s like the movie is a race car that lost its steering wheel ten minutes in. You’ve got these opera singers trying to do their thing, singing high notes and being serious, and then—boom—the Marx brothers show up and start rearranging the furniture.
Watching this made me think of the manic energy in . Both movies feel like they were made by people who were bored with how 'proper' movies were supposed to be at the time. They’re both just throwing things at the screen to see what sticks.
It’s not perfect. The musical numbers are long, and they stop the momentum dead in its tracks. I usually skipped through them to get back to the brothers causing property damage. But that’s the charm. It’s lopsided. It’s frantic. It’s just a great time if you stop trying to keep track of the plot.
