6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. ABC milosci remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is ABC milosci worth your time today? If you like movies that feel like a dusty postcard from a century ago, absolutely. It’s light, it’s breezy, and it’s deeply rooted in that specific 1930s charm where everyone is either frantic or hopelessly in love. If you’re the type of person who needs a complex plot or high-stakes action, you’re probably going to be bored to tears within twenty minutes. Don't say I didn't warn you.
The whole thing centers on Wincenty Poziomka. He’s essentially a guy trying to keep his head above water. It’s not exactly Out of the Fog when it comes to tension, but it has its own weird rhythm.
Maria Bogda is genuinely magnetic here. She carries scenes just by standing there, looking like she’s about to either laugh at someone or start a revolution. It’s the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re watching a film made in a completely different reality.
There is this one scene where Wincenty is trying to juggle his work obligations with his crush. It goes on a little longer than it needs to, and the silence in the room feels a bit like a real-life awkward date. It's charming, though. It’s not trying to be a La femme nue style drama, and that’s for the best.
I found myself staring at the background extras more than once. They have this funny way of hovering just outside the frame, like they’re waiting for the lunch break to start. It’s oddly distracting, but in a way that feels honest.
Is it perfect? No, not by a long shot. The plot kind of wanders off into the woods toward the middle, much like the aimless strolls in Two Lame Ducks. But there’s a heart to it that’s hard to ignore.
The movie gets noticeably better once it stops trying to be a proper romantic comedy and just lets the characters be weird for a bit. It’s a bit like watching a home movie that accidentally became a feature film. I liked it well enough, even if I won't remember the ending by tomorrow morning.
