If you have an hour to spare and like watching guys in suits solve problems with their fists, Against the Law is worth a look. It is a classic B-movie that doesn't try to be anything fancy. 🚕
Johnny Mack Brown plays Steve, a daring ambulance driver. He has this weird, high-energy way of talking that makes every scene feel like a race.
The first half is mostly Steve and his friend Bill, who is a surgeon, fighting over nurse Martha Gray. It's a bit silly, really. They are supposed to be professional, but they act like teenagers at a dance.
It reminds me a bit of the working-class energy in The Chauffeur. Just guys trying to make a living and getting distracted by romance.
Then the movie shifts gears. Suddenly, Bill is in trouble with a merciless racketeer and a gambling gang.
The transition is pretty abrupt. One minute it's a romantic comedy, and the next it's a crime thriller with high stakes.
I noticed the sound quality is a bit hit or miss. Sometimes the sirens drown out the actors, which is probably realistic but a bit annoying. 📢
The gambling den looks like it was built on a very small budget. It’s mostly just two tables and a lot of smoke. It feels a bit like the sets in Torchy's Hold-Up, where everything is a little cramped.
Steve eventually decides he has to smash the gang himself. He stops being a driver and starts being a one-man army.
The fight scenes are that old-school style where people just swing their arms wildly. It is not choreographed like a modern movie, but it has a charm to it.
I wish Sally Blane, who plays Martha, had more to do. She spends most of the time looking worried or standing in the background while the men argue. It’s a very 1934 role.
If you enjoy films like Ex-Bad Boy, you will probably like the vibe here. It’s rough around the edges and doesn't care about being perfect.
One reaction shot of the doctor looking guilty lasts about five seconds too long. I actually laughed because he looked like he forgot his next line.
The ending comes out of nowhere. The bad guys get caught, the girl is happy, and then the credits roll before you can even blink. 🎬
It’s not a profound piece of art, but it’s a fun slice of history. It feels like a movie made by people who just wanted to tell a fast story and go home for dinner.
I’d say watch it if you like vintage crime or if you just want to see what an ambulance looked like ninety years ago. Don't expect anything deep, and you'll have a good time.
