A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Glamour remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for vintage melodrama and don't mind when the plot gets a little bit extra, sure, give it a go. But if you’re looking for something that moves fast or keeps its feet on the ground, you’re probably going to be bored by the second act. It’s for the folks who like their black-and-white films with a heavy dose of longing and dramatic piano music.
The whole thing centers on a chorus girl who is bored with her marriage. Then she meets a composer, and suddenly everything is about ✨passion✨ and sacrifice. It’s very 1930s in the way it handles heartbreaks. I kept waiting for someone to just have a normal conversation, but that wasn't in the script, apparently.
There’s a scene early on where she’s practicing her steps, and the camera lingers just a second too long on her shoes. It felt like the director was trying to make a point about how tired she is, but it mostly just made me notice how dusty the floor looked. Sometimes the most interesting things in these old movies are the background details that nobody meant for you to see.
The chemistry between the leads is... well, it’s definitely there, but it feels like they’re shouting their feelings across a canyon. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Counsellor at Law, though this one lacks that same punchy, cynical edge. It’s softer, more focused on the romance, which can get a bit sticky after a while.
The movie gets way better once it stops trying to be so sophisticated and just lets the characters be messy. Watching her struggle between the stable life and the creative, chaotic one is relatable, even if the costumes look like they belong in a museum now. It isn't a masterpiece, but it’s got a weird, dusty heart to it.
I left it feeling a bit indifferent, honestly. Not every movie needs to be a life-changing event, right? Sometimes you just want to watch people make bad choices in fancy outfits while the orchestra plays really, really loud. If that’s your vibe tonight, you’ll have a fine time.
