If you have a soft spot for melodramas that feel like they were carved out of wood, you might dig Alilanggogae. But if you need your pacing to be snappy or your dialogue to feel less like a lecture, stay far away. This is for the patient crowd who likes looking at period costumes and feeling that specific ache of 'what if.' 🕰️
Honestly, Ye-bong Moon is doing some serious heavy lifting here. The script keeps trying to shove her into these tiny, sad boxes, but she’s got this way of looking at the camera that just cuts through all the noise. Every time she’s on screen, the movie wakes up for a second.
The noble family dynamic is... exhausting. It reminds me of the rigid, suffocating atmosphere in The Eagle, where everyone is so busy worrying about their bloodlines they forget to actually be human. The parents here aren't just villains; they're like human roadblocks with fancy robes.
There’s a moment near the middle where they just stare at each other for way too long. I’m talking painfully long. It’s supposed to be romantic tension, I guess, but it mostly just made me wonder if the film reel had gotten stuck. You can practically hear the director yelling "Keep holding it!" from behind the curtain. 🙄
It’s not as chaotic or fun as Betty Boop's Big Boss, that’s for sure. It feels way more like a museum piece. You look at it, you appreciate the craft, but you don't necessarily want to live inside it.
Maybe it’s the era, but there's a certain stiffness to the movement. It’s not graceful, exactly. It’s more like everyone is afraid of breaking the furniture. I think the movie is better when it forgets the plot and just lets the characters exist in the quiet gaps. 🍂
Still, for a film this old, it has a heartbeat. It’s faint, but it’s there. Don't go in expecting a masterpiece, just expect to feel a bit tired for the lovers by the time the credits roll. I think I need a nap now.
