7.2/10

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Alô Alô Carnaval remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any interest in the history of music or just want to see what a party looked like in 1936, yes, watch it. It’s loud, it’s frantic, and it feels like a fever dream of sequins and brass instruments. If you need a movie to actually, you know, have a narrative structure that makes sense, you should probably skip this. It’s less of a story and more of an excuse to get as many famous singers on camera as possible before the lights go out.
The whole premise is just a loose wire holding together a dozen different stage acts. Two guys want to put on a show. The casino owner says no. The owner’s star walks out. The guys say 'I told you so' and the show starts. That’s it. That’s the movie.
Honestly, you forget the plot about ten minutes in anyway. It’s impossible to care about the producers when Carmen Miranda is on screen doing her thing. She has this magnetic energy that makes the rest of the movie feel like it’s just trying to keep up. It’s like she’s vibrating at a different frequency than the camera.
It’s funny to compare this to something like The Romance of Elaine, which at least tries to pretend it has a serious bone in its body. Alô Alô Carnaval doesn't care. It’s too busy sweating through its tuxedos and playing another chorus of a samba hit to worry about logic.
Some of the comedy bits feel like they've been dragged through a century of dust, but then Oscarito shows up and suddenly the screen comes alive again. He does this thing with his eyes—just a quick flicker—that makes you realize he’s the only one in the room who knows the whole production is a total disaster. It’s brilliant.
Is it perfect? Absolutely not. It’s a mess. But it’s a joyful, loud, brassy mess that reminds me of that feeling when a song gets stuck in your head and you can’t stop tapping your foot. Just don’t go in expecting a deep drama. It’s a radio show with legs, and sometimes, that’s all you really need for a Saturday afternoon. 💃🎺
