6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Am I Having Fun! remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably won't find Am I Having Fun! worth the watch unless you're a total sucker for black-and-white slapstick that refuses to slow down.
If you love old school physical comedy where people just yell at each other for ten minutes straight, you’ll get a kick out of it. If you prefer, you know, actual plot or pacing that makes sense, you're gonna have a bad time.
The whole thing feels like it was put together in a blender. It’s got that frantic energy where the actors seem to be competing for who can wave their arms around the most.
Andy Clyde is doing his best, but he's basically just a human pinball here. The bits with the maharajah and his harem? Weirdly specific and pretty disjointed.
You can tell they were trying to cram as much 'humor' as possible into a tiny runtime. It makes the movie feel like a fever dream where you accidentally drank 12% alcohol medicine.
There's a scene where Arthur Housman is just stumbling around being drunk, and it goes on way longer than it needs to. I found myself staring at the background extras, wondering if they were actually confused or just waiting for their cue to leave.
It definitely lacks the refined rhythm you see in something like Westward Whoa. That movie understood how to let a joke breathe before smashing your face into the next one.
Some of the editing choices are just bizarre. They cut from a punch to a reaction shot that feels like it’s from a completely different set. It’s jarring, but also kind of fascinating in a what-were-they-thinking kind of way.
At one point, the druggist character is just standing there with his bottles, looking like he wants to be literally anywhere else. I felt for him.
If you’re looking for a serious narrative, look elsewhere. But if you want to see a chaotic relic of old-timey comedy, go for it.
Just don't expect it to make much sense by the time the credits roll. 🚕💨
