A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ani imôto remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
You should probably skip Ani imôto if you need a fast-paced plot or something to keep you on the edge of your seat. This isn't that. But if you have an hour or two to sit with characters who are struggling to just be, it hits different. It feels like watching someone try to hold water in their hands.
Eijirō Tōno is doing some really subtle work here. There’s this one moment where he’s just sitting there, barely moving his eyes, and you can see the entire history of his disappointment. It’s not flashy. It’s just heavy.
The movie doesn't rush through the uncomfortable silences. Sometimes the silence is where the real story is happening. I caught myself looking at the background wallpaper in a few scenes—it’s got this faded, peeling quality that matches the mood perfectly. Maybe that was intentional, maybe not. Doesn't really matter.
It’s strange how much the tone reminds me of the pacing in Liebelei, even though the worlds are totally different. Both films seem to know exactly when to let a look hang in the air for an extra second too long. It makes you feel like an intruder.
There are parts that feel a bit dusty, honestly. Some of the dialogue is just… a lot of talking to get to a point that you already understood ten minutes ago. It’s not a perfect movie, and that’s why I kind of like it. It feels human, flaws and all.
I found myself getting annoyed at the characters for being so stubborn. But isn't that the point? People rarely make the easy choice, especially when their pride is stuck in the way. 🙄
The lighting feels very intentional in the later acts. It gets darker, moodier, like the house itself is tired of the secrets. I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece, but it’s a film that respects your intelligence enough to let you figure out the mess on your own.
Worth a watch? Sure. If you’re in the mood for something that leaves a bit of a bruise. Just don't expect a happy ending tied up in a neat little bow. It doesn't give you that, and I think that’s for the best. 🎞️
