5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Bachelor's Folly remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old British films that feel like they were shot in a damp library, you might get a kick out of this. It's slow. Like, real slow. If you prefer your mysteries to move at breakneck speed, look elsewhere. Honestly, this is for people who want to see a very specific brand of 1930s charm without expecting any real surprises. 🏇
The whole thing revolves around a bankrupt horse owner who finds himself in hot water after a race goes south. Enter the butler, who just happens to be an ex-convict. It’s the kind of premise that sounds like it should have more grit, but it’s mostly just polite people talking in drawing rooms.
I found myself thinking about The Cat and the Fiddle while watching this, mostly because both movies have that strange, stiff energy where the actors seem terrified of bumping into the furniture. You can practically hear the director yelling "cut" in your head before they even finish their lines.
The butler character? He's the only one who seems to have a personality. Everyone else is just kind of a placeholder for 'rich person in debt' or 'grumpy horse trainer.' It’s not necessarily bad, just very, very predictable. You don't watch this for the plot twists. You watch it because you want to see a guy in a suit solve a problem using nothing but manners and a bit of criminal intuition.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Does it do exactly what it says on the tin? Sure. It’s a bit like eating plain toast. It’s not exciting, but it’s not going to ruin your afternoon either. I honestly stopped paying attention to the race plot halfway through and just started tracking how many times they drank tea. (Spoiler: A lot.)
Don't expect the intensity of Tiger Land here. This is a far cry from that. It’s quiet. Sometimes, it’s too quiet. The silence in the middle of the film starts to feel a bit heavy, like the movie itself is waiting for someone to finally do something interesting. ☕
