7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Borrah Minevitch and His Harmonica Rascals remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have ten minutes and you like weird old stuff, then yes. It is definitely worth watching. It's great for people who love vaudeville or just want to see something that feels like it shouldn't exist anymore. If you hate high-pitched noises or slapstick where people get hit a lot, you will probably find it annoying.
I found this short while falling down a rabbit hole of old Vitaphone clips. It’s directed by Roy Mack, who did a ton of these musical shorts back in the day. The whole thing is basically a stage act caught on film, and man, the energy is unhinged.
The first thing you notice is the suits. Everyone is dressed like they are going to a very serious funeral, but then they start jumping around. Borrah Minevitch stands in the middle like a cool guy, while everyone else does the hard work. He has this very specific smug look that kind of makes you want to laugh and roll your eyes at the same time. 😏
The real star, though, is the little guy, Johnny Puleo. He’s tiny and has this face that looks like a squeezed lemon. The whole gag is that the bigger guys just bully the absolute hell out of him. They push him, they step on him, and they interrupt his solos. It’s that old-school comedy that feels a bit mean today, but his reactions are gold.
He tries to play this teeny-tiny harmonica, and then some guy comes in with one the size of a loaf of bread. It’s ridiculous. It reminds me of the chaos in The Joyous Trouble-Makers, where the humor is just 100% physical. There is no plot here, just vibes and mouth organs.
Speaking of the music... it is actually incredible. You expect it to be a joke, but these guys are virtuosos. They play so fast it doesn't even sound like a harmonica anymore. It sounds like a whole orchestra made of metal and breath. 🎶
I noticed one guy in the back row who looks like he’s thinking about his grocery list. He is barely moving while the others are doing backflips. It’s those little details that make these old shorts so fun to watch. You can see the people who are tired of doing the same show five times a day.
The camera work is pretty boring, honestly. Roy Mack just lets the camera sit there. It feels like you’re sitting in the front row of a dusty theater in 1935. But that’s fine because the performers are so busy you don't need fancy editing. In fact, a lot of modern movies like The Aviator try to recreate this look, but you can't beat the real thing.
There’s a weird moment where they all start dancing in a line. It’s not particularly good dancing. It’s more like synchronized stumbling. But they are still playing the harmonicas perfectly while doing it! How do they not choke? I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time.
The sound is a bit scratchy. It’s got that hiss that all these old talkies have. Sometimes the high notes get a bit piercing and it might make your dog bark. But it adds to the charm. It’s like finding an old dusty toy in the attic that still works perfectly.
I watched this right after seeing The Soup Song, and this is much more entertaining. It’s got more life in it. Even though it's just a bunch of guys blowing into tin cans, it feels important in a strange way. Like, people used to pay real money to see this in a theater before the main movie started.
The ending is super abrupt. They just kind of finish a song and the screen goes black. No credits, no "thank you for coming," just bam, it’s over. It feels like they just ran out of tape or the cameraman wanted to go to lunch. 🥪
It’s not a masterpiece of cinema. It’s not trying to be Road to Life or some big emotional drama. It’s just ten minutes of people being very good at a very specific, weird skill. And honestly? I think we need more of that. It’s better than most things on TikTok today.
If you’re looking for a deep story, look elsewhere. But if you want to see a man get hit in the head while playing a masterpiece on a mouth organ, this is your film. It’s loud, it’s fast, and it’s a little bit crazy. Give it a watch.
