If you have two hours to spare and love retro sci-fi that looks like it was filmed in a high school gymnasium, yes, Brave New World is totally worth a watch today. Book nerds will probably hate how much gets chopped out, but fans of weird, low-budget futuristic vibes will have a blast. 🛸
The government has made everyone super happy by feeding them pills and making them buy endless useless stuff. Sounds a bit too familiar, right?
Our main guy, Bernard Marx, is the only one who seems to have a soul, or at least he looks like he desperately needs a nap. The actor playing Bernard has this incredibly funny way of staring at people like they just sneezed on him.
He just stands there in his silver jumpsuit, looking absolutely miserable while everyone else is dancing around. Speaking of costumes, the outfits are truly something else.
They look like they were made from leftover tin foil and blue plastic tablecloths. It is wonderful.
There is a scene where they visit the "Savage Reservation" and the transition is so abrupt it feels like a completely different movie. Suddenly we are in a dusty canyon and the sound quality drops by half. 🏜️
It reminds me of how old-school stage plays used to handle outdoor scenes, much like the strange set designs in The Man Who Stayed at Home. It's got that same stiff, theatrical energy where you can almost hear the floorboards creaking.
Let's talk about the "Soma" pills. They look exactly like giant yellow M&Ms, and people pop them like they are candy, which I guess they basically are.
The pacing is incredibly weird. The first hour is just Bernard complaining, and then the last twenty minutes feels like a sprint to the finish line where everyone suddenly loses their minds.
I kept waiting for a big emotional payoff, but instead we get a weirdly quiet ending that just sort of... stops. It's biggest flaw is probably this rush, but honestly, who cares when the hats look that funny.
Is it a masterpiece? Absolutely not, and it does not try to be.
But there is something very charming about how hard they tried with such a tiny budget. If you want a polished sci-fi epic, go watch something else, but if you want to see a guy in a shiny suit look depressed for two hours, this is the one. 📺
