6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Burg Theatre remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for dusty, black-and-white dramas about theater types who take themselves way too seriously, you might actually dig Burg Theatre. If you prefer movies where things move at a pace faster than a snail crawling through molasses, you should probably just skip this one entirely.
It’s a strange little film. Friedrich Mitterer is the kind of guy who makes The Day of Faith feel like an action flick by comparison. He’s the star, he’s a genius, but he’s also a total wreck whenever he isn't standing under a spotlight. Watching him try to talk to Leni without his prompter is like watching someone try to assemble IKEA furniture without the manual. It’s painful, but you can’t quite look away.
I mean, who actually uses their prompter to flirt? It’s such an odd, specific detail that keeps the movie from feeling totally standard. There is this one scene where he’s trying to say something romantic and just stares at the poor prompter like a lost puppy. It lasted way too long. I think I checked my phone twice before he finally got a sentence out.
The whole vibe reminds me a bit of the stuffy, high-stakes atmosphere you see in Hadda Padda, but with more ego and fewer stakes. Mitterer is clearly meant to be a legend, but he comes off as a bit of a child. Maybe that’s the point? The movie doesn't really hold your hand to explain his motivations. It just lets him be a nuisance.
There are moments where the film almost stops being about acting and turns into a study of pure loneliness. You can see it in his eyes when the house lights go down. He doesn't know who he is without the mask of a character. It's not profound or anything, but it’s genuinely sad in a quiet way.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Does it have that weird, lived-in feeling of a film that was made a long time ago by people who really cared about the craft? Yes. It’s not for everyone, but if you like watching people unravel, you could do worse on a rainy Tuesday. Just don't expect a fast ride.
