4.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Call Her Sausage remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you’re deep into obscure vintage shorts or just really, really love deli meat jokes. If you’re looking for a tight script or something that holds up today, you’ll probably hate it. It’s loud, it’s frantic, and it’s about as subtle as a brick to the forehead. 🥪
Billy Gilbert is clearly trying to carry the weight of the room here. He’s got that manic energy that either makes you laugh or makes you want to turn the volume down to zero. Watching him try to manage a deli while Ben Blue ruins literally every single sandwich order is just… exhausting. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion, but with more mustard.
The centerpiece is this riff on the "who's on first" routine. You can tell they were *dying* to nail that rhythm. Sometimes they get close, but most of the time it just feels like they’re shouting over each other to see who can be louder. It’s not smooth, it’s not clever, but it’s definitely persistent.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Foxy Ambrose, though that one had a slightly better handle on its own pacing. This movie doesn't really have a 'pacing'—it just has a 'speed' and it stays stuck on it until the credits finally roll.
There is a moment near the middle where they actually stop the yelling. It lasts for maybe three seconds. It was the best part of the whole film. Then they started yelling again.
I wouldn't say this is a disaster, but it’s certainly not a hidden gem either. It’s just a loud, messy short that exists. If you’ve seen The Gate Crasher, you know the vibe—lots of noise, not a ton of substance, but someone clearly had a lot of fun making it.
Anyway, I think I’m done with deli humor for the month. Don't go in expecting genius. Just go in expecting a lot of talking.
