6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ces messieurs de la Santé remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s French cinema that doesn't feel like a dusty museum piece, then yes, jump right in. It’s for the folks who want to see a masterclass in screen presence rather than a tight, logical plot. If you need your movies to be fast-paced, modern, or logical, you will probably hate every minute of this.
Honestly, the whole thing starts with such a ridiculous premise that I almost clicked away. A prisoner hypnotizes the warden? Sure, okay. But then Raimu starts talking, and suddenly I didn't care about the physics of the scene anymore.
Raimu just owns the frame. He has this way of looking at other actors like he’s already sold them a bridge they haven't realized they bought yet. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Safety Last!, though obviously much less physical and way more talky.
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it feels like a stage play that was pushed out onto the street just to get some fresh air. It’s charmingly messy. There’s a scene where the dialogue just loops around itself, and you can tell the actors are having a blast trying to keep a straight face.
It’s not trying to change your life. It’s just trying to be a pleasant distraction. It’s a bit like watching a cousin who’s a serial liar tell a story at dinner—you know it’s mostly garbage, but you’re entertained anyway. 🍷
I caught myself thinking about My Best Girl halfway through, just because of the weird way these older comedies handle romantic subplots. They always feel like an afterthought, tacked on because someone decided the audience needed a love story to feel 'full.' It never really lands, but it doesn't sink the ship either.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than most of the stuff on streaming services today? I’ll let you decide. Just don't go in looking for some profound statement on the French penal system. You’ll be sorely disappointed. 🕵️♂️
