5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ciboulette remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you like theater-kids-on-film. If you enjoy bright costumes, loud singing, and plots that move faster than the actual logic, you’ll have a grand old time. If you need a movie to make sense in a grounded way, you’re going to be bored to tears within fifteen minutes. It’s definitely not for everyone, especially if you’re allergic to musical outbursts in the middle of a grocery market.
Watching Ciboulette feels a bit like stumbling into a very loud, very frantic party where everyone is trying to explain a joke you didn't hear. The film has this restless, kinetic energy that is equal parts charming and exhausting.
Duparquet is basically the puppet master here. He’s running around Les Halles like he’s got a personal vendetta against boredom. It’s funny, in a way, watching him try to mold these two young people into a couple like he’s playing with dolls. You can practically see the gears turning in his head, which is both impressive and slightly creepy.
I found myself zoning out a bit during the musical numbers, but then something weird would happen, like a stray cat running across the frame or an actor forgetting to look where they were going. Those little mistakes are the best part. It’s not polished, and that’s why I actually finished the thing.
It definitely reminds me of the manic energy in The Girl Hater, though this one is way more concerned with its own vocal range. Sometimes it tries so hard to be delightful that it accidentally becomes a bit grating.
The pacing is a total disaster, honestly. One minute we’re in a serious romantic dilemma, the next someone is dancing on a crate. It’s jarring. I’m not sure if the director knew exactly what kind of movie they were making, but I kind of respect the commitment to just doing *everything* at once. 🤷♂️
Don't look for deep meaning here. It’s just fluff, but it’s high-quality, old-school, slightly dusty French fluff. If you want something that feels like a time capsule of a specific kind of stage-to-screen adaptation, watch it. Just maybe keep the volume knob handy.
