6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Circus remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for rubber-hose animation and don't mind a story that barely exists, sure. This is for the animation history nerds and people who like their cartoons to feel a little bit like a fever dream.
If you need character development or, I don't know, a coherent plot, you are going to be bored out of your mind. Honestly, you could do worse than watching Flip get pushed around for a few minutes. 🐸
Flip is just a guy trying to sell hot dogs. It’s a relatable struggle, honestly. The whole circus setting is just an excuse to make everything stretch and snap in ways that shouldn't be physically possible.
The thief shows up and suddenly it's a chase. It’s not exactly Sherlock Holmes levels of suspense. But it moves fast.
It’s funny how these old shorts have a rhythm that modern stuff just doesn't get. It’s all about the bounce. Everything bounces.
I caught myself watching the background extras more than the actual chase. Some of those animals have really weird expressions. Like they know they’re just filler.
If you're coming off a marathon of Accordion Joe or Fire Bugs, this feels right at home. It’s got that same frantic energy that makes your brain itch a little.
Not a masterpiece. Not trying to be. Just a frog with a hot dog cart, doing his best. Sometimes that's enough for a Tuesday afternoon.
