7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Clock Cleaners remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is Clock Cleaners worth watching today? Honestly, yeah. If you like classic animation that doesn't care about your blood pressure, you'll love it. If you’re the type of person who needs everything to make sense or feels anxious watching people struggle at their jobs, maybe skip it. It’s basically a short masterclass in how to turn a simple chore into a full-blown crisis.
The whole thing is just three guys trying to clean a clock tower. That’s it. But man, the way the gears move is just hypnotic. You can practically hear the grease and the clicking.
Mickey’s segment with the stork is the highlight for me. That bird is so stubborn, just refusing to leave its perch. It’s a perfect little standoff. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy you see in The Good Bad Boy, just pure, unfiltered chaos for no reason other than the characters exist.
Then there’s Donald. Oh, Donald. Watching him get tangled up in that main-spring is almost painful to watch. It’s not just funny—it’s like he’s fighting the very concept of physics and losing badly. ⚙️
Goofy’s part inside the bell is the one that really sticks with you though. When the clock strikes four, he’s just… trapped. It’s a bit mean-spirited, isn't it? I love it.
There isn't a complex message here. It’s not trying to change the world. It’s just showing three icons of animation being absolutely useless at manual labor. Sometimes that’s all you need on a Tuesday afternoon.
A few stray thoughts:
It’s funny how movies like this feel so much more alive than the stuff they pump out now. It’s not polished to death. It’s just ink, paper, and a lot of personality. If you haven't seen it in a while, go look it up. It’s short, it’s loud, and it’s better than most things you'll find on a streaming service today. 🕰️
