5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Crashing Hollywood remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like they were made in a blender by people who were slightly bored, then sure. It’s mostly for the vintage crowd who enjoy seeing old studio lots and stiff collars.
If you need logic, pacing, or a plot that doesn't just wander off into the bushes, you’re going to hate this. It’s thin, it’s loud, and it moves like it’s trying to beat a parking ticket.
There is this one moment early on where the farm girl just walks into a room, and for some reason, the camera stays on her for an extra five seconds while she looks at a lamp. It’s bizarre. Why are we looking at the lamp? Maybe the director just liked the lighting.
The whole thing feels like a cousin to Broadway Rose, but with significantly less charm and way more shouting. Every man in the movie treats the main character like she’s made of pure gold, which gets old fast.
The middle of this movie is just one long, chaotic party that feels like it was filmed in a furniture warehouse. People are bumping into things, glasses are clinking, and I’m pretty sure one of the extras is just standing in the corner trying to remember if he left his oven on.
It’s a bit like watching The Grim Comedian if you stripped away the actual comedy. You can feel the actors trying to force the chemistry, and it’s actually kind of sweet in a pathetic way. 🤷♂️
Betty Grable is in this, which is fine, but the movie doesn't really know what to do with her. She’s just… there. Floating around the edges of the frame like a ghost in a cocktail dress.
I wouldn’t call it a waste of time, exactly. It’s more of a curiosity. You sit there, you watch the silly hats, and you wonder how many takes they needed to get that one guy to stop tripping over his own feet. Probably not enough.
Anyway, it’s not going to change your life. But if you’re tired of modern stuff that’s all polish and no dirt, this is a nice little trip into the weeds. Just don't expect it to make much sense by the end. I’m not sure the writers did either. 🎞️
