Honestly? Probably not, unless you’re really into the history of early Spanish talkies or you have a weird soft spot for films that feel like someone just pointed a camera at a stage production. If you want something that actually moves, look elsewhere. If you like 1930s melodrama that doesn't quite know if it wants to be a tragedy or a farce, you might find something to latch onto here.
Imperio Argentina is clearly the main draw, and she’s got that old-school star power that makes you look at her even when the script is falling apart. The rest of the cast feels like they are shouting into a wind tunnel, trying to make sure the microphone catches every single syllable.
It’s all very static. You’re going to spend a lot of time watching people stand in parlors and talk about their problems. It reminds me a bit of So Simple, where the pacing just sort of stops dead to let someone finish a long, winded monologue. It isn't exactly riveting stuff, but it's weirdly comforting in its own dusty, black-and-white way.
There’s a moment about halfway through where the pacing just completely falls off a cliff. It’s almost impressive how they managed to make the premise feel so flat. It’s nowhere near the tension you might find in something like The Fall of the House of Usher, and frankly, that's fine. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece.
I found myself staring at the wallpaper in the background of the main room. It’s got this strange pattern that looks like it was drawn by someone who had never actually seen a flower before. It’s distracting, and in a way, it’s the most interesting thing happening in the frame for about five minutes straight.
If you're looking for a hidden gem, this isn't it. It's a curiosity. A time capsule. A movie that was probably perfectly fine for a Friday night in 1932, but feels like an endurance test today. You can almost feel the filmmakers struggling with the limitations of the sound equipment. Everything is so... heavy.
Maybe watch it if you're stuck in a cabin with no internet and a very limited DVD collection. Otherwise, save your energy. 🤷♂️
