5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Det gyldne smil remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that make you feel a bit tired in the chest—the good kind of tired—then yes. If you need explosions or a plot that moves at a breakneck speed, look elsewhere. You will probably find this frustrating if you prefer your characters to be clear-cut and easy to read.
Det gyldne smil is one of those films that doesn't scream its message at you. Instead, it just sort of sits there, staring back at you.
The core of the story is this actress who has been 'on' for so long that her real voice has essentially checked out. There’s a specific scene where she’s looking in a mirror, and you can tell she’s trying to find a version of herself that isn’t rehearsed. It’s quiet. Maybe a bit too quiet.
Sometimes the film lingers on her face for a second or two too long. It’s uncomfortable. It reminds me of watching You Find It Everywhere, where you get that same sense of people trapped in roles they didn't really sign up for.
I wasn't always sure if I liked the pacing. Sometimes it feels like the movie is waiting for the audience to catch up, and sometimes it feels like it’s just dragging its feet because it doesn't want to get to the ending. It’s messy, but human.
It’s not as manic as Ebberöds bank, which is probably for the best. It takes itself seriously, but it avoids that stiff, academic vibe that ruins so many older dramas.
Maybe it’s not a masterpiece. But it feels honest. And these days, that’s enough for me. 🎭
