5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ed's Coed remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
So, Ed's Coed. If you're the type who enjoys those older, slightly goofy college films where the plot is mostly just an excuse for a few pranks and some innocent flirting, then yeah, you might find a bit of fun here. It’s pretty lighthearted. Anyone expecting something with a deep message or really sharp humor might find it a bit… simple. Like, _really_ simple. 🤷♀️
Ed starts out at his family's sawmill, all set to just keep doing that. His dad, bless his heart, wants him to go to college. Ed's not keen until his cousin shows up with a pretty co-ed. And just like that, the gears turn in Ed's head. Suddenly, higher education looks a lot more interesting. It's a classic setup, really.
When Ed actually gets to campus, things get predictably messy. The sophomores are, of course, ready to haze the new country boy. You can tell they put some thought into their little initiation rituals, even if the execution sometimes feels a little _too_ staged. Like, the way everyone lines up perfectly for the water balloon toss? A bit much.
There's this one moment where Ed is trying to navigate a crowded hallway, and he just looks so utterly bewildered. His hat gets knocked off like, three times in that one scene. It feels very authentic to someone just out of a sawmill and into a bustling campus.
The film does a good job, I guess, of showing Ed's determination. He takes the hazing in stride, mostly. You expect him to get really upset or run away, but he just keeps going. It's his core strength, I suppose.
The pacing gets a bit wobbly in the middle. There are a few scenes that just sort of… exist. They don't really move the plot forward or develop characters. It's like they had some extra film and decided, "Let's just show Ed walking around campus for a bit."
One reaction shot of Ed, after a particularly messy prank, lingers so long it almost becomes funny. You can almost feel the movie saying, "See? He's a good sport!"
The co-ed who catches Ed's eye is charming, in a very demure, period-appropriate way. Their interactions are sweet but don't expect any fireworks. It’s more of a gentle unfolding, like a flower in slow motion.
The ending ties things up pretty neatly, as you'd expect. No big surprises. It’s a comfortable, if somewhat unremarkable, journey for Ed. It’s the kind of film you put on if you want something simple playing in the background.
It’s an okay watch if you’re curious about older, low-stakes comedies. Don't go in expecting a masterpiece, just a quiet, slightly clumsy trip to college. 🏫
