6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ein steinreicher Mann remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old, frantic black-and-white comedies where everyone is shouting and moving at double speed, then sure. It’s short, punchy, and doesn't waste a second. If you need your movies to be serious or have a logical plot, you’ll probably find this one annoying.
The whole premise is just absurd. Curt swallows a diamond, thinking it's chewing gum. Honestly, who makes that mistake? But it sets the tone for the rest of the movie—total, unhinged chaos.
Watching the jeweler react when he realizes his inventory just walked down the throat of his apprentice is a highlight. The panic is palpable. It feels less like a crime movie and more like a fever dream about workplace safety gone wrong.
The gangsters are exactly what you'd expect. They aren't menacing so much as they are loud and perpetually irritated. They spend half the film looming over Curt, looking for an excuse to get out their tools. It’s dark, but in that weird way that early comedies often get away with.
Dolly is the only person here with a functioning brain. Watching her try to navigate this disaster is where the movie finds its rhythm. She’s moving through the chaos like she’s the only one who knows the house is on fire. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Paris express, where the environment is constantly trying to trip up the characters.
There is this one scene in the shop where the lighting is just… off. It’s super harsh on the faces. Everyone looks like they haven't slept in a week. It actually adds to the tension, even if it was probably just a lack of equipment back then.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it definitely feels like a relic from a different time. Sometimes it feels more like a stage play that someone decided to film on a Tuesday afternoon. There's an odd, jagged charm to that, though. It’s way more interesting than the polished stuff we see now.
If you enjoy the slapstick desperation of Almost Heroes, you might get a kick out of this. It’s not the same kind of humor, but the feeling of 'everything is falling apart' is identical. A weird little watch for a rainy night.
