6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Estudantes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for something that feels like a warm, fuzzy blanket from the 1930s, Estudantes is probably your jam. It's not going to change your life, and honestly, the plot is thinner than a piece of notebook paper. But if you dig old-fashioned musical comedies where everyone is a little bit too happy and the rivalry is mostly just guys acting like goofs, you’ll have a decent time.
Who is this for? Honestly, anyone who likes classic cinema that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you get annoyed by people breaking into song or plots that revolve entirely around who is dating who, you should probably skip this one. It's definitely not for the 'gritty realism' crowd.
The whole movie hinges on the arrival of a new girl. You know the trope—the beautiful brunette walks in, and suddenly everyone forgets how to do basic math. It’s classic. Watching the two main guys trip over their own feet to impress her feels a bit like watching The Fair Cheat, where the stakes feel high but are actually pretty small-town stuff.
There is a specific moment where the guys are trying to out-sing each other, and it goes on just a little bit too long. You can practically see the actors wondering if they should keep going or just quit while they’re ahead. It’s awkward, but in a way that feels kind of sweet? It’s not polished, and that’s why I liked it.
Carmen Miranda shows up, and as usual, she just breathes life into the whole frame the second she’s on screen. The rest of the cast is fine, but she’s on a totally different level of energy. It’s almost unfair to the other actors.
The pacing is a bit all over the place. Sometimes it sprints, other times it just kind of hangs out in the hallway for a while. It reminded me a bit of the frantic, slightly unhinged energy in The Prodigal Liar. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece. It just wants to make you grin for an hour or so.
If you find yourself watching this late at night, don't overthink it. Just enjoy the music and the vintage outfits. It’s a nice little time capsule. 📽️
