5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Exposure remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you’re a completionist for this era of filmmaking. It’s the kind of flick that feels like a rough draft for a much better movie that never got written. If you like your dramas with a side of ‘wait, why is he doing that?’ then you might find something to latch onto.
People who will hate it: Anyone looking for tight pacing or a protagonist who isn't borderline creepy. The whole dynamic is just a bit… off.
The reporter guy, he’s not exactly a hero. He spends half the film hovering around this girl, pushing her to work harder at a failing business. It feels less like professional mentorship and more like he’s trying to trap her in a specific place so he can keep visiting. 🚩
There’s a scene near the middle where they’re talking in the office and the background extras are just… doing nothing. Like, they’re staring at walls. It’s oddly distracting. I spent more time watching a guy in the back try to look busy with a stack of papers than I did listening to the actual dialogue.
The chemistry? It’s hit or miss. Mostly miss. It feels like they were filming on a tight schedule and just hoped the audience wouldn't notice the lack of actual sparks. It’s nowhere near the charm you find in something like The Triflers.
I caught myself checking the clock around the forty-minute mark. The plot just sort of loops in on itself. He talks. She sighs. He pushes. She cries. Repeat.
That said, there are these tiny, weirdly specific moments where the acting feels totally real for about five seconds. Like when someone fumbles a prop or laughs at a joke that wasn't supposed to be funny. Those tiny, jagged edges are the only reason I didn't turn it off.
It’s not as polished as The Velvet Hand, and it definitely lacks the momentum of Handle with Care. It’s just… there. Existing in its own little vacuum of old-timey corporate stress.
If you're in the mood for something that isn't trying too hard to be a masterpiece, maybe give it a go. Just don't expect it to stick with you once the screen goes black. 🎞️
