6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Funebrák remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school slapstick and have a soft spot for actors who don't know the meaning of the word 'subtle,' then Funebrák is for you. It’s a relic, honestly. If you need a plot that makes sense or characters that behave like real human beings, you’re going to hate every second of this. It's loud, it's weird, and it moves at the speed of a caffeinated squirrel.
Vlasta Burian is the whole show here. He plays the undertaker with this manic energy that makes you wonder if he’s actually acting or just vibrating through the scenes. There’s a specific bit where he’s trying to navigate a wedding, convinced he’s at a burial, and the way his face shifts from 'professional grief' to 'opportunistic greed' is just priceless. 🎭
The premise is absurd. The idea that someone would mistake a wedding for a funeral is the kind of flimsy setup that usually kills a movie. But Burian makes it work because he commits to the bit so hard it hurts. It’s not about the plot—it’s about watching a man scramble to keep a lie going while everything falls apart around him.
I couldn't help but think about how different this is from the grittier stuff like The Criminal. There’s no weight here, just pure, unadulterated nonsense. It’s light, almost like a piece of paper blowing in the wind. Sometimes that’s all you want, right?
There’s a moment in the middle where the film just feels like it’s running on fumes, but then Burian does something so physically ridiculous that you stop caring about the pacing. He’s like a human rubber band. I think I counted him jumping over or into furniture at least five times in one scene. Why? Who knows. It’s just funny.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than sitting through another generic blockbuster? Absolutely. It’s a little dusty around the edges, sure, but there’s a genuine spark here that you don't find in big-budget stuff. Just don't ask me to explain the insurance fraud plot in detail, because even the movie seems to forget about it for long stretches. 💀
