5.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Green Eyes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Green Eyes tonight? Only if you have a soft spot for dusty, creaky 1930s murder mysteries where everyone is a suspect and half the cast looks like they got lost on their way to a different movie set. 🕵️♂️
If you want fast-paced action or a plot that makes actual sense, you will probably hate this.
It starts with a costume party at a big country mansion, which is always a great excuse for cheap props. The owner of the place gets stabbed and stuffed in a closet.
And not just any closet, but one of those tiny ones where you wonder how they even squeezed him in there. The body practically falls out like a bag of laundry when they finally open the door.
The police show up, but they are mostly useless. They spend more time scratching their heads than actually looking for clues.
Instead, we get a nosey guest who decides he is a detective. His name is Bill, and he wears this incredibly loud suit that distracted me for the entire second act.
Speaking of clothes, the masquerade costumes are easily the best part of the whole thing. One guy is wearing a giant, terrifying cat mask that looks more like a nightmare than a party outfit. 🐱
It reminds me a bit of the oddball characters in Close Relations, though that one was much funnier.
The movie has this weird habit of lingering on people's faces for way too long. Like, someone will say a completely normal line, and then the camera just stares at them for five seconds of dead silence.
You can almost hear the director whispering "cut" in the background.
Also, there is a subplot about a stolen letter that nobody seems to actually care about. It gets mentioned three times and then just... vanishes from the plot entirely.
I love how cheap the sets look. You can tell the mansion walls are made of thin wood because they visibly wobble when a door gets slammed too hard.
If you like these old talkies, it has a certain charm, sort of like Lawyer Man but with way less polish and much more sneaking around in the dark.
Just don't expect a masterpiece. It's a quick, silly watch for a rainy Sunday afternoon when you don't want to think too hard.
