You should probably watch this if you have a soft spot for silent films that take place in the middle of a blizzard. ❄️
If you need high-octane action or a plot that makes total sense, you're definitely going to hate it.
It’s a short little movie, really. Georgia Hale is the main reason to even click play.
She’s got this great face that tells you exactly what she’s thinking without those annoying title cards. Most of the time she just looks tired of the guys in the bar.
Alice is a "brassy" girl, which back then just meant she didn't let men walk all over her. I loved the way she handled that one guy who got too close during the dance scene.
The snow looks like it might actually just be piles of salt or maybe flour. It doesn't really matter, but it's funny to watch them pretend to freeze.
There's this moment where Alice is fixing her hair in a tiny mirror. It goes on for a while, and it’s actually the most human part of the whole film.
The two guys chasing her, Steve and Chappie, are kind of interchangeable. Steve is the "good" one, but he's a bit of a bore to be honest.
Chappie has a name that sounds like a brand of lip balm. He's the one you know is trouble the second he walks on screen. 🤡
I kept thinking about The White Pearl while watching this. Both movies feel like they were filmed on a tiny stage that's trying very hard to be the big outdoors.
The cabin where they spend a lot of time is so small it feels claustrophobic. You can see the actors trying not to hit the walls.
I noticed a dog in one scene that looked very confused about why it was there. It just stared at the camera for a solid five seconds.
It’s not as heavy or dramatic as something like So Big. It’s more of a light snack of a movie.
The plot about Alice "playing her cards well" is basically just her being smarter than everyone else. I wish the writing gave her even more to do.
The ending happens so fast I actually had to rewind it. One minute there's a problem, and the next, everyone is just fine and the movie is over.
There is a weird jitter in the film quality during the big confrontation. It adds a bit of accidental grit to the scene, I guess.
It’s way more watchable than The Firing Line because the lead actress actually has a pulse. Georgia Hale really makes you care about a story that’s otherwise pretty thin.
Don't expect a masterpiece and you'll have a good time. It’s just a nice, dusty relic from 1928. 📽️
One more thing—the hats in this movie are incredible. Alice wears this one fuzzy hat that looks like it could double as a small bear.
