7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Half a Sinner remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies where everyone talks over each other at 100 miles per hour, sure. It is a light, breezy, and mostly forgettable ride. If you need a plot that actually holds water, look elsewhere. Honestly, the whole thing feels like a stage play that someone forgot to edit down.
The story follows a con man who decides the best way to fleece people is by wearing a cheap suit and pretending to be a preacher. It works for about five minutes until he gets stuck on a bus with a group of people who are all, let's be honest, kind of weirdos. 🚌
The performances are all over the place. Some actors are clearly trying to win an Oscar, while others seem like they just wandered in from the craft services table. The guy playing the con man is sweating through his shirt in almost every frame. You can tell he is stressed, and I do not mean just in the movie.
There is this one scene involving a suitcase that goes on for way too long. It is just people arguing about luggage, and the camera stays on them until you start looking at the wallpaper behind them. The wallpaper is actually kind of nice, if you like that sort of thing.
It is not as heavy or thoughtful as something like My Uncle from America, but it isn't trying to be. It is just trying to kill an hour. Sometimes, the movie feels like it might accidentally turn into a drama, but then someone trips over their own feet, and we are back to the slapstick.
I found myself thinking about Crashin' Broadway halfway through. They share that same desperate energy where the characters are just running around trying to avoid their own problems. It is a specific type of chaos that I usually appreciate, even when the execution is a bit sloppy.
The ending? Well, let's just say the movie gets tired of its own plot. It just stops. No big resolution, no massive payoff. Just done. Honestly, that was the most refreshing part.
If you have nothing better to do on a rainy Tuesday, this will keep you awake. Just do not expect to remember much about it by Wednesday morning. It’s a movie that exists, and that’s about all you can say for it. 🤷♂️
