6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Happy Hampstead! remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on if you like watching old footage of people just… existing in a park. If you want high-octane drama, skip this. But if you have a soft spot for quiet neighborhood histories and don't mind something that feels more like a home movie than a documentary, you’ll probably find it charming.
It’s not trying to be The Hobo of Pizen City, that’s for sure. It’s just Hampstead. It’s green, it’s old, and the narrator is very polite about it.
There’s a specific bit where the camera lingers on a Bank Holiday fair. The people look like they’re having a genuinely nice time, which feels rare now. It’s not flashy, just honest. 🌳
Sometimes the editing jumps around a bit too fast for my liking. One second you’re looking at an artist’s house, and suddenly we’re at the top of a hill. It’s a bit jarring. A little jarring.
The whole thing feels very much like a Sunday morning when you’ve had too much tea. It’s not quite as punchy as Arctic Antics, but it has this weird, sleepy soul to it. You can tell they really love the place.
It’s not going to change your life. It won't stick in your head like The Critical Age, but it’s a nice enough way to kill ten minutes. Sometimes, that’s all you really need from a movie. 🤷♂️
