So, Hollywood Sand Witches. Let’s be real, this isn't for a casual movie night. If you're a film historian, or just morbidly curious about early, often troubling, cinema, then maybe. Everyone else? Probably best to skip this one. 😬
What we've got here is a 1928 silent 16mm short. The premise, if you can call it that, involves some fellas just kinda meandering on a beach, then they find some nude women. That’s pretty much the whole deal.

Then the women appear. The nudity is there, of course. It’s presented with this sort of matter-of-factness, not particularly artful or shocking in a modern sense, but definitely *there*. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you this moment matters, but it’s hard to tell why.
And then there's *that* part. The racist themes. They aren't subtle. They pop up like an unwelcome guest and just
The silence of the film really amplifies the strangeness. There’s no score to guide your emotions, just the stark visuals. One reaction shot, or what passes for one, lingers so long it almost becomes funny, then just… awkward. 😬
It’s hard to call it a film in the narrative sense. More like a series of staged moments. Like someone had a camera, a beach, and some ideas, some of them
This isn't a movie you enjoy. It’s a movie you *observe*. It’s a document, a fragment of history, showing us what was considered entertainment, or maybe just what someone managed to get on film, in a very different time. A scan on the Internet Archive makes it accessible, but that doesn't mean it's easy to watch.
It’s important that these things exist, for context. But
