4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Honours Easy remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s British studio dramas that feel like they were filmed inside a well-appointed living room, you’ll probably find something to like here. It’s not exactly high-octane stuff. If you need pacing that moves faster than a polite stroll through the park, you’ll hate it. It’s a slow burner, but not the kind that pays off with a massive explosion.
The whole premise hinges on a man who just cannot let things go for seventeen years. That is a long time to stay angry at someone. I was watching and thinking, don't you have hobbies? Maybe take up gardening?
There is something about the way these older films handle dialogue that feels almost like a stage play. Everything is enunciated perfectly. You can tell they’re holding onto the roots of the Roland Pertwee play it’s based on. The set design is very tidy. Too tidy, maybe. It feels like the characters are living in a catalog.
Patric Knowles and Margaret Lockwood are fine here, but the real fun is watching the sheer pettiness of the villain. He’s going through a lot of effort to frame this kid. It makes me wonder if he ever considered just moving to a different city instead. The energy he spends on this plot is honestly kind of impressive.
The film doesn't really try to do anything fancy with the camera. It just sits there and lets the actors talk at each other. Sometimes that’s enough. But other times, you find yourself staring at the wallpaper pattern in the background for a little too long. It’s not a masterpiece. But it’s a decent way to kill an hour if you like your drama served with a bit of tea and a lot of grudge-holding.
It’s funny how these movies from the 30s have such a specific rhythm. It’s like a metronome that only ticks when someone is about to reveal a secret. 🕰️ I’m not sure I’d recommend it to everyone, but if you’re a completist for this era, you’ve probably already seen it. If not, go in expecting a quiet, slightly dusty affair.
