4.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hook and Ladder No. 1 remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have about seven minutes and a soft spot for the kind of animation that feels like it was drawn on a rollercoaster, then yes. This is essential viewing for anyone who likes their cartoons to be loud, fast, and completely unconcerned with logic. If you need a plot that makes sense or physics that aren't purely suggestion-based, you should probably skip this and go watch The Covered Wagon instead.
There is this specific, frantic rhythm to Hook and Ladder No. 1 that modern stuff just doesn't replicate. It’s not smooth. It’s jagged. The firemen move like they’re being poked by invisible needles. Honestly, it’s refreshing.
The whole premise is just a building on fire and a lady who really needs a ladder. That’s it. It’s barely a story, but it’s a great excuse for a lot of rubber-hose limbs flailing around. Why are the hoses acting like snakes? I don't know, but I’m glad they are.
There’s a moment where a fireman tries to climb a ladder that keeps bending like a piece of overcooked spaghetti. It goes on way longer than it needs to. It’s funny because it feels like the animators just got bored with reality and decided to break the building entirely. 🏢
Compared to the stiffer, more serious pace of something like The Planter, this feels like an absolute fever dream. There’s no attempt at a grand narrative. It’s just visual gags stacked on top of visual gags until the screen gets too crowded to follow. Sometimes, you just need that.
It’s not perfect. The backgrounds are sometimes so sparse you wonder if they forgot to finish coloring the street. But who cares? You’re watching to see if the firemen actually reach the top floor without accidentally turning into pretzels. Spoiler: they do, but it’s a struggle.
If you’ve seen Sherlock's Home, you know the vibe. It’s that same frantic, bouncy energy that defines the Terrytoons era. It’s not deep, it’s not smart, and it definitely isn't trying to change your life. It’s just a cartoon about a fire. And honestly? That's enough. 🔥
