A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hot Tip remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for something to watch on a rainy Tuesday, Hot Tip is either a total time-sink or a weirdly charming relic. If you love old-school, fast-talking comedies where everyone is shouting over each other, you might dig it. But if you have zero patience for plots that rely entirely on 'dads making bad choices,' you will probably want to turn it off within the first ten minutes.
The whole thing feels like it was put together on a lunch break. Jimmy decides that the only way to solve his family's money problems is to bet on horses. Because, naturally, that always goes well in these movies. It’s not exactly high stakes, but it moves with this frantic, jittery energy that makes you wonder if anyone actually slept during production.
There is this one scene at the track that just goes on forever. The extras in the background are doing that weird thing where they pretend to talk to each other but are actually just staring at the camera. It’s distracting in a way that’s almost hypnotic. One guy in a flat cap keeps checking his watch like he’s got a bus to catch.
Zasu Pitts is doing her usual thing, which is great if you like that specific brand of nervous energy. She carries scenes that would otherwise just be people standing around in rooms looking worried. It’s funny how a single facial expression can hold a whole scene together when the script is barely holding on.
I couldn't help but think about how different this feels compared to something like Our Modern Maidens. That one has a certain polish, a gloss to it. Hot Tip is more like a scuffed-up coin you find in a sofa cushion. It’s not shiny, but it’s real.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Does it feel like a human being actually bothered to make it? Yes. Sometimes that’s enough. The movie gets noticeably better when it stops pretending to be a family drama and just leans into the absurdity of a guy trying to bet his way to a wedding gift. It’s a mess, but it’s a lively, mostly harmless one. 🐎
