6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Il canale degli angeli remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you want a polished, high-octane thriller, keep walking. You’ll probably hate this. But if you’re the kind of person who likes movies that feel like a dusty photograph you found in an attic, Il canale degli angeli is worth a look. It’s got this weird, heavy atmosphere that just sticks to you, even if the plot decides to take a nap halfway through.
It’s not trying to be a masterpiece. It’s just trying to exist in that space between a dream and a headache. Honestly, I kind of love it for that.
The cinematography captures Venice in a way that feels lonely. Forget the gondolas and the tourists; this is all shadows and murky water. There’s a scene near the middle—I can't even tell you why it mattered—where a character just stares at a wall for an uncomfortable amount of time. It’s strange. It makes the silence feel heavy, like the building itself is tired of holding everyone up.
The performances by Otello Toso and the rest of the cast aren't trying to be big or loud. They’re muted. Almost like they’re whispering to each other because they’re afraid of waking up the city. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just feels like they’re waiting for the director to yell cut so they can go get a coffee.
Watching this reminded me a bit of the aimless, drifting energy in Say It with Diamonds, though they are obviously very different beasts. Both films have that habit of letting a moment sit there until it gets awkward. It’s a bold choice, I guess. Or maybe they just ran out of film.
The movie gets noticeably better when it stops pretending it has a clear direction. Once it embraces the chaos of just being a mood piece, it hits harder. It’s not perfect. It’s barely even put together in some spots. But it feels real, which is more than I can say for most of the stuff coming out these days. 🛶
Don't look for answers here. You won't find any. Just enjoy the ride and maybe watch it on a rainy night when you’re already feeling a bit out of sorts.
