A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. J'aime toutes les femmes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school musicals where the plot is mostly just an excuse to get someone singing on a balcony, you’ll probably get a kick out of J'aime toutes les femmes. It’s light, it’s fluffy, and it doesn't try to be anything more than a bit of fun. If you hate theatrical acting or plots that move purely because people keep bumping into their lookalikes, you should probably skip this one. It's not exactly deep, but it has a certain sparkle that you just don't see much these days. 🎶
Jan Kiepura is doing double duty here, playing both the famous tenor Jean and the struggling grocer Eugène. Honestly, he’s having a blast. You can tell he loves being the center of attention in every single frame. There’s this one moment where he’s singing and he just stares straight into the camera like he’s trying to hypnotize the entire audience. It’s a little bit much, but hey, that’s show business I guess.
The whole 'rich man meets poor lookalike' thing is a bit tired, but the movie rolls with it anyway. Watching Eugène try to act like a fancy opera star is the highlight, mostly because he’s so clearly out of his element. It reminded me a bit of the playful tone in The Grand Duchess and the Waiter, even if they aren't the same type of story at all. Sometimes, it’s just fun to watch people pretend to be someone else.
The pacing is a bit all over the place. Sometimes scenes drag on when they could have been cut in half, especially the musical numbers that just go on and on. Then other stuff—like the actual romance—happens so fast you might blink and miss it. It’s messy, but it’s a friendly kind of messy. 🤷♂️
It’s not a film I’d recommend for a serious movie night, but for a rainy Sunday? Sure. It’s got that weird, old-fashioned sweetness that doesn't really exist in modern cinema. It doesn't need to be perfect to be enjoyable. Sometimes just watching a guy realize he’s way out of his depth while singing a high note is enough to make you smile. 🎬
