4.4/10

A definitive 4.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Jane Eyre remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you are a completionist who needs to see every adaptation of this story, sure. Go for it. But if you are just looking for a cozy movie night, you might find this one a bit too dry and stiff. It moves fast, which I actually appreciated, but it lacks that thick, gothic atmosphere that makes the book so sticky. If you want something with more grit, maybe skip this and go watch The Solitaire Man for a change of pace.
The pacing here is almost frantic. We zoom through Jane's childhood in about ten minutes, and before you know it, she’s already at Thornfield Hall. It’s like the director had a train to catch. Honestly, it felt a little rushed.
Colin Clive as Rochester is definitely doing his own thing. He’s much less of a brooding, dark romantic and more just a guy who seems like he hasn't slept in a week. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s definitely not what you’d expect if you’re picturing the usual tall, dark, and dangerous types. He has this twitchy energy that makes me wonder if he’s going to explode or just fall asleep mid-sentence.
The sets look like they were pulled straight out of a community theater production. Everything feels a little thin, like you could poke a finger through the walls. There is this one scene in the hallway that goes on for a bit, and I couldn't stop looking at the wallpaper. It was peeling at the corner. Nobody bothered to fix it. I kind of loved that detail.
There is a weird lack of tension during the big secrets reveal. You know the one. In the book, it’s supposed to be this massive, heart-stopping moment, but here? It’s like, "Oh, by the way, there is someone in the attic." It’s handled with the urgency of someone mentioning they forgot to buy milk. 🥛
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly great adaptation. But there is something strangely charming about how bare-bones it is. It’s like a sketch of the movie we all know, missing all the paint and the fine details. If you’re into movie history, watch it for the weird choices. If you’re just bored on a Tuesday, maybe look elsewhere.
