7.4/10

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Intimate Interviews: James Cagney remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a weird obsession with old Hollywood or just want to see a movie star act like a regular human for ten minutes, sure. It’s not a narrative film in any sense of the word. If you go in expecting a biopic or a high-stakes drama, you’re going to be bored out of your mind. It’s for the folks who like digging through film archives just to see how people held their cigarettes in the 30s.
The whole thing is just Dorothy West sitting across from James Cagney. There’s no fancy lighting, no dramatic camera angles. It feels more like a home movie that accidentally got released. Honestly, it’s refreshing how unpolished it is compared to the stuff we watch today.
Cagney is surprisingly chill. You’re used to seeing him play these loud, fast-talking tough guys in Broadway Rose or whatever else he was juggling, but here he’s just… sitting. It’s almost startling. He shifts in his seat like he’s trying to find a comfortable spot on a couch that clearly wasn’t meant for a long interview.
There’s this moment where he talks about his early days, and he doesn’t have that polished "star" cadence yet. He stumbles over a few words. He looks at the floor. It’s strangely human. It’s the kind of imperfection you just don’t get in modern PR tours.
It’s not as chaotic as Who Hit Me?, obviously. It’s just a conversation. Sometimes the camera lingers on Cagney’s face while he’s thinking of what to say next, and you can see him calculating whether or not he wants to share a specific story. You don’t get that vulnerability in a studio-approved interview.
I found myself wondering if they were actually drinking something in those glasses or if it was just a prop for the camera. The movie doesn't care if you notice the little things. It doesn't try to impress you.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a nice little fragment of history. If you've ever seen Rain or sat through some of those old, dusty silent films like Karadjordje, this will feel like a shift in pace. Just don't go in expecting a performance. It's just a guy, a couch, and some questions. 🎞️
