5.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Lash of the Penitentes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are a fan of cinematic oddities or have a weird obsession with how movies used to be pasted together back in the day. If you want a tight thriller or a respectful look at history, you will probably hate it. It is disjointed, a bit exploitative, and entirely confusing. 🤷♂️
The whole thing feels like the filmmakers found a dusty reel of film in a basement and thought, "I bet I can write a script around this." You have these polished, staged scenes with actors trying to look serious, and then suddenly, we are watching grainy, uncomfortable footage of real people performing public penance.
It creates this massive tonal whiplash that is hard to shake. One minute you are watching a guy in a suit talk about a crime, and the next, you are staring at a blurred image of a real ritual that feels like it belongs in a totally different century.
The acting is exactly what you would expect from this era of B-movies. Josef Swickard tries his best, but the script is basically just a scaffold for the documentary footage. It is not exactly high art, but it has a certain unintentional charm in how desperate it is to connect the dots.
If you are looking for something that feels like a polished studio picture, look elsewhere. This isn't Employees' Entrance by a long shot. It lacks the professional polish, but it has that frantic energy of something made on a shoestring budget just to fill a theater screen.
It’s almost brave how little they care about smooth editing. They just slam these two worlds together and hope for the best. Sometimes it works in a creepy, atmospheric way. Most of the time, you are just left wondering what the director was thinking during the edit.
It is worth noting that if you enjoy the weird, disjointed pacing found in The Past of Mary Holmes, you might find something to latch onto here. But don't expect it to make much sense. It is a fever dream of a movie that doesn't really want to be explained. It just wants to be watched, for better or worse. 🎥
