6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Last of the Pagans remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably only want to watch this if you’re into the kind of old-school, slightly dusty adventure movies that don't make much sense by modern standards. If you love seeing tropical scenery from the 1930s or you're a sucker for melodramatic romance that moves at a snail's pace, you’ll dig it. If you need snappy dialogue and a plot that stays on the rails? You’re going to hate this thing. It’s a bit of a slog, but it’s a beautiful one.
The whole thing feels like it’s vibrating on a weird frequency. It’s not trying to be like Four Feathers or anything that grand. It’s smaller, weirder, and way more obsessed with its own location than it is with making the miners seem like actual human beings. They’re just... loud suits in the jungle.
The chemistry between the leads is sweet, but there’s this one scene where they're just walking through the surf for what feels like ten minutes. I checked my phone twice. Why does the camera linger there? It’s not poetic. It’s just long. 🌊
Also, notice the way the light hits the sand in the background. It’s honestly distracting. I stopped listening to the dialogue just to stare at the shadows of the palm trees. Maybe that’s the point? Maybe the movie knows the plot is paper-thin and wants us to look at the scenery instead.
You can tell they wanted this to be some big, sweeping epic about the loss of paradise. Sometimes it hits that mark, like during the storm sequence. Other times, it feels like they just ran out of film and had to wrap it up early. It’s messy. I don’t mind messy.
It definitely has more soul than something like Man's Mania for Speed, which feels like a total factory job. This one has real dirt under its fingernails. Even if the writing feels a bit like it was scribbled on a napkin during lunch, the vibe is totally there.
Don't expect to be changed. Don't expect to remember the names of the bad guys. Just sit back, enjoy the old-school grain, and accept that some movies are just better off being seen as a series of strange, sun-baked postcards. 🌴
