6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. L'Atlantide remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch L'Atlantide? Only if you have a thing for black-and-white atmosphere and don't mind a movie that moves at the speed of a camel in a sandstorm. It’s perfect for people who want to see 1930s-style grandiosity, but if you need a plot that doesn't just circle the drain for two hours, you’ll probably be checking your watch.
The whole setup is basically a fever dream. You’ve got these two guys wandering the desert until they hit this hidden city, and honestly, the transition is so abrupt it’s almost funny. One minute they’re thirsty, the next they’re dealing with the Queen, Antinea. She’s got this whole 'I collect men' thing going on that makes the vibe shift from adventure flick to weirdly dark romance real fast.
Brigitte Helm is just electric in this. She carries that crown like it weighs fifty pounds, and her eyes seem to be looking at something about three miles behind the camera. When she’s on screen, you don’t really care that the plot is basically just people standing around talking about destiny or whatever. You just watch her.
The mummification part? It’s kind of a bummer that it happens off-screen, mostly. You see the statues, which are creepy enough, but there’s this specific moment where a character realizes his fate and the look on his face is just… oof. It’s grounded, weirdly enough, even though the whole movie feels like it’s set on another planet.
I couldn't help but compare the vibe to the slow-burn intensity you find in Bushi no îe, though they are obviously miles apart in genre. Sometimes the silence in these rooms is louder than the dialogue.
The sets are huge. Like, absurdly huge. You can tell they built these massive pillars just to make the humans look like ants, and it works. But then there are these stretches where nothing happens except someone staring out a window or walking down a hallway. It’s very 1932. You have to be in the mood for it.
It’s not a movie you watch for the action. It’s a movie you watch because you want to be trapped in a strange, dusty dream for a while. Just don't expect it to explain itself.
