6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Le roi des Champs-Élysées remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for Buster Keaton, sure. If you’re looking for a tight, high-stakes comedy, maybe look elsewhere. It’s definitely for the completists who want to see the stone-faced legend navigating a French production, but people who need non-stop gags might get bored halfway through.
Keaton plays a guy trying to break into the movies in Paris. He ends up looking exactly like some criminal, which leads to the usual running around. It’s not exactly groundbreaking stuff. You’ve seen this plot before, probably a dozen times.
But there’s something about the way he carries himself in a European setting that feels off in a fun way. It’s not quite as polished as his silent work, but he still moves with that same mechanical grace, even when the film around him feels a bit loose. Sometimes he just stands there while chaos happens, and that’s still the best part of his act.
I noticed a scene where he’s trying to charm someone in a cafe, and the pacing just… stops. It’s not even a dramatic pause. It’s like the editor took a coffee break and forgot to trim the footage. It’s oddly charming, actually.
Comparing this to something like Laughing Gas, the energy is totally different. It lacks that sharp, punchy timing that made his earlier stuff so iconic. It’s a bit more domestic, a bit more grounded in a way that doesn't always work for a slapstick master.
There’s a bit where he tries to get an autograph or a part in a film, and it drags on for a solid minute too long. The silence in the room starts to feel heavy, and you can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this interaction is going to change his life. It doesn't.
Still, watching him is like visiting an old friend who has moved to a new city. Everything looks different, and they aren't doing the same tricks they used to, but the familiar sparkle is there. Don't go in expecting a masterpiece. Just go in for the occasional smirk. 🎞️
