6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Legong: Dance of the Virgins remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a dusty window into a world that doesn't exist anymore, watch this. If you need a fast-moving plot or modern acting, stay far away. You will probably find it boring. I found it kind of hypnotic.
This movie isn't really a movie in the way we think of them. It's more like a living postcard from 1935 Bali. There is a story about sisters and a guy with a flute, sure. But the real point seems to be the dance itself.
The Legong dance scenes are wild. They go on for a long time. The girls’ fingers move in ways that look physically impossible. Sometimes I forgot there was even a plot about who is dating who. I just stared at the colors.
It’s funny to think about how this compares to something like The Big House. One is a gritty prison flick, and the other is this strange, beautiful slice of island life. They both exist in the same era but feel like they are from different planets.
The acting is… well, it’s not exactly acting. It feels more like people being asked to stand in a beautiful place and look serious. Sometimes it works. Other times, it feels like they’re just waiting for the director to tell them they can go home.
I don't think this is a 'good' film by any technical standard. The storytelling is clumsy at best. But there is something honest about it. It doesn't feel like a studio product. It feels like an experiment.
Don't expect it to change your life. Just enjoy the weirdness of it. It’s a relic, and that’s perfectly fine. 🌴
