5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Les vignes du seigneur remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you want a quick trip to 1930s Paris and don't mind a movie that feels like a filmed play, then yes, Les vignes du seigneur is worth your time. Anyone who loves physical comedy and old-school French charm will probably get a kick out of it.
But if you hate static cameras and people standing in fancy rooms just shouting? Yeah, you will absolutely hate this.
Honestly, I went in expecting some dry, dusty classic. It turned out to be a really goofy story about a guy who is a total gentleman when sober, but becomes a menace after a few glasses of wine.
The plot centers around Henri, played by Victor Boucher, who is madly in love with a married woman. The catch is he only has the courage to admit it when he is completely plastered on the local vinyard's best stuff.
Boucher has this incredibly elastic face. When sober, he looks like a worried accountant who forgot to turn off his stove.
But once he gets some champagne in him, his eyes go glassy and he starts doing this weird, bouncy walk. It’s genuinely funny to watch.
There is this one scene where he tries to explain the 'philosophy of wine' to some stuffy rich folks. He keeps leaning on this flimsy table that wobbles every single time, and I kept waiting for the set to collapse.
It feels so raw and unpolished, like they just did one take and called it a day. 🤷♂️
The supporting cast mostly just stands around looking shocked. Mady Berry is great as the loud mother who exists purely to shout at servants and fan herself when things get scandalous.
It’s definitely not a heavy drama like One Stolen Night. And it lacks the dark, moody streets of Shadows of the Moulin Rouge, which is probably for the best.
This movie works best when it’s just being silly in the sun. It gets way less fun in the second half when the romance drama takes over and people start crying about their feelings.
Still, for a film made in 1932, it has this weirdly infectious energy. It’s a messy, loud, and slightly drunken slice of French history that doesn't care about being a masterpiece.
