6.3/10

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Little Ol' Bosko and the Cannibals remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you are a serious animation historian who needs to see every single frame produced in the 1930s. If you’re looking for something light or fun, stay far away from this one. It’s deeply uncomfortable and frankly, it hasn't aged a day past its offensive roots. 🐸
The whole premise is simple enough. Little Bosko is walking through the woods with a bag of cookies. Then he hits a swamp full of frogs that are basically parodies of famous Black entertainers of the era. It’s jarring.
The animation itself is fluid, I’ll give it that. The way the frogs move is classic early-century rubber-hose style. But the execution? It’s just mean-spirited. You spend the whole time wondering why they bothered to animate these specific caricatures at all. It feels less like a tribute and more like a cruel joke that went on for way too many minutes.
I found myself staring at the background art more than the characters. The swamp scenery has this weird, swampy depth to it that you don't see in later, cleaner cartoons. It’s dark and moody, which actually clashes with the slapstick stuff happening in the foreground. It’s like two different movies fighting for space.
The music is technically skilled, which makes the content even more frustrating. You have these talented voices—the Basin Street Boys and others—but they are forced into these weird, groveling roles. It’s hard to listen to. It’s the kind of thing where you keep waiting for the punchline, but it never really comes.
If you want to see how far the medium has come, I suppose you could compare this to something like The Scarab Murder Case, though they aren't really in the same genre. Actually, scratch that. They don't have anything in common. My brain just jumped there because I’ve been watching a lot of old stuff lately.
It’s not often I walk away from a short film wishing I could just erase the last ten minutes. This is one of those times. There is no charm here. Just a lot of loud noises and some really sad creative choices. If you’re curious, look it up in a library database, but maybe don't hit play unless you have a high tolerance for vintage cringe.
