Senior Film Conservator

Is this worth watching today? Only if you have a real soft spot for silent films that feel like they were filmed in someone's very fancy, very dusty living room. If you hate over-acting or plots that move like a tired turtle, you should probably skip it. 🐢
It’s basically about this guy who is a great painter but has zero money. Then a rich lady shows up and decides to be his "patron." We all know where this is going, right?
The guy, played by Georgi Ivanov, is supposed to be this huge talent. But I don't think we ever see him actually paint anything believable. He just sort of waves a brush near a canvas while looking intensely thoughtful.
Things get messy when he falls for the daughter. The mom is not happy about this. At all.
There is a scene where the mother is watching them from behind a curtain. Her eyes are doing so much work. It’s almost funny how obvious her "secret" jealousy is to everyone except the characters in the movie.
It reminds me a bit of the high-stakes drama you get in The Hundredth Chance, but with more of a classic Bulgarian vibe. Or maybe just less budget.
The pacing is... well, it is a silent movie from the 20s. You have to be in a very specific mood. Some parts feel like they take a year just to finish a single conversation via title cards.
The murder happens so fast compared to the rest of the film. One minute they are arguing, and the next... bam. The artist is done for. It's a bit of a shock how quickly the tone shifts from romance to a crime scene.
And then the daughter goes to a nunnery. Because of course she does. That was basically the only career path for sad girls in 1928 cinema, apparently. ⛪
I noticed a weird smudge on the lens in one of the outdoor scenes. It looks like a thumb print or maybe just dirt. It kept distracting me from the "tragedy" of the scene.
It is definitely not as fun as something like Scared Stiff. It is heavy and a bit clunky in the middle.
But there is something honestly nice about seeing these old Bulgarian streets. They look so empty and quiet, like a ghost town. 🎥
The costumes are actually pretty decent. The rich woman has some hats that are probably wider than her own shoulders. It's very of its time.
If you like seeing how people used to tell stories before everyone had a smartphone and a TikTok account, it's a decent way to spend some time. Just don't expect a masterpiece that will change your life.
The acting is very big. Lots of clutching hearts and throwing heads back. It’s a bit much, but that was the style, I guess. Very theatrical.
It's a weird little relic. I'm glad I watched it, but I don't think I'll be rushing to see it again anytime soon. It's the kind of movie you watch once and then just sort of think about the hats for a few days.
