6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Man's Best Friend remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for something that won't make your brain melt after a long day, Man's Best Friend is exactly the weird little snack you need. It’s definitely not for anyone who demands high-octane thrills or CGI spectacle. If you want to see a dog act better than the grown-ups, though? You’re in the right place. 🐶
The whole thing hinges on a local crank who clearly woke up on the wrong side of the century. He’s mean. Like, 'yelling at clouds' mean. Watching him try to bully a kid and his dog is almost funny because he puts so much energy into being a jerk.
There’s this one moment where the dog—Lightning, I think?—just stares him down. The dog doesn't even growl. He just looks at the guy like, 'Really, man? That's all you got?' It’s a better performance than half the humans on screen. Sorry, not sorry.
I couldn't help but think about how much simpler the stakes were back then. No grand epics, no world-ending threats. Just a guy being a pill and a dog being a hero. It reminded me a bit of the pacing in The Gossipy Plumber, where everything just sort of exists in its own little bubble.
The film is pretty short, which is a mercy. It doesn't overstay its welcome. It doesn't try to teach you some heavy lesson about the human condition or whatever. It just lets the dog save the day and rolls the credits. Simple.
I noticed the background extras in the street scenes look like they’re trying really hard not to look at the camera. It’s charming in a way that feels very 1930s. Everyone is acting like they’re in a play, even when they’re just standing by a fence.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it worth your twenty minutes while you eat a sandwich? Absolutely.
It’s not trying to be Camille, and that’s why it works. It knows exactly what it is. And honestly, I respect that. Sometimes you don't need a three-act structure. You just need a dog and a bad guy.
