6/10

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Melody Cruise remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for pre-code musical comedies, Melody Cruise is a total delight. It’s light, it’s fluffy, and it doesn't try to be anything other than a good time on the water. If you’re looking for a tight, logical plot or deep character studies, you’re definitely in the wrong harbor. This one is for the fans of old-school Vaudeville energy.
The whole thing feels like a stage show that accidentally wandered onto a boat. You’ve got your classic playboy lead who is absolutely terrified of being tied down, which is a trope older than the boat itself. But honestly? It works because the cast is having a blast.
Charles Ruggles is doing a lot of heavy lifting here as the friend, and he’s just so funny to watch. He’s basically the guy in the corner trying to keep the lead out of trouble, but he’s failing miserably. It’s like watching someone try to put out a fire with a squirt gun.
There is this one scene where the music just starts swelling out of nowhere. It’s incredibly cheesy, but it’s hard not to tap your feet. You can tell they didn't have the budget of a modern blockbuster, so they just leaned into the personality of the performers instead.
Speaking of the cast, Betty Grable shows up looking like she’s already a star. It’s just a reminder that even in smaller roles, she has that magnetic pull that makes you stop looking at whoever else is on screen.
Sometimes the movie feels like it’s held together by duct tape and high-fives. It doesn't have the polish of a massive studio production, but that’s exactly why I liked it. It feels real, in a weirdly stagey, 1930s sort of way.
It’s not quite as wild as Loose Ankles, this is a safe bet for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The ending is exactly what you expect. Everyone ends up happy, the boat arrives in California, and nobody learned a single lesson. Sometimes, that is exactly the kind of movie I need. Just don't ask me to explain the plot again, because I’m already forgetting the names of the secondary characters. 🚢
