7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mister Cinders remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're the kind of person who likes black-and-white musicals where the plot is thinner than a piece of parchment, you'll probably have a decent time. If you need grit, realism, or anything that doesn't feel like a stage play taped to a camera, stay far, far away. This isn't The Animal Kingdom, and it isn't trying to be.
Bill is just doing too much. He's running around his uncle’s estate, dealing with stepbrothers who seem to have been born without a personality, and trying to stay happy about it. It’s a lot to watch, honestly. I found myself wanting to reach into the screen and just tell him to go on a vacation.
Then there’s the whole 'Fairy Goodmother' thing. It’s played by a maid, which is a clever enough pivot, I guess. It moves the whole thing away from magic wands and into the realm of 'people just helping people,' which feels a bit more honest even if it is a musical.
They pop up exactly when you expect them to. Sometimes the transition is smooth, and other times it feels like someone just hit a 'start music' button in the middle of a sentence. It’s charming, though. It feels like they were all having a laugh on set.
The stepbrothers are the worst. They’re so dull it almost becomes a character trait. You can feel the movie trying to make them annoying, and it succeeds a little too well. I caught myself zoning out every time they walked into the frame. 😴
It’s not a masterpiece. It doesn't have the weight of Die Somme: Das Grab der Millionen, but it’s not trying to be a historical document. It’s just trying to be a bit of fun. Sometimes that’s enough.
The way Bill just takes everything in stride is honestly a bit unrealistic, but who watches a musical for the grit? I liked the bits where he’s actually working—you can tell they put some effort into making it look like he was doing actual chores. The rest of the time, it's just singing and dancing. It’s light. It’s easy. It’s over before you really get tired of it.
I think I liked it because it feels so small. It doesn't try to change the world. It’s just a guy, some mean relatives, and a ball. Sometimes, that’s all you need on a Tuesday night. 🎭
